The ATS electrical cabinet will detect a power outage and quickly switch to a backup power source, ensuring the electrical system operates continuously and stably. The operating mechanism of an ATS panel is quite complex as time delay and other components play an important role in switching to backup power.
Sensor frequency and voltage
ATS cabinets are capable of detecting voltage drops or power outages. This function is performed thanks to sensors pre-installed in the ATS electrical cabinet. Voltage and frequency need to be at a level suitable for the backup power source before transferring the load to the generator to ensure the generator's ability to accept the load.
Delay time
When switching automatically to backup power or vice versa, there will be a time delay. This time delay is necessary to ensure that the load is stable enough to switch to the backup power source. When switching from backup power to grid power, this delay will ensure that grid power is stable before transferring loads. The delay time can last from 0 to 30 minutes. Another common type of delay involves the engine cool-down period. During this time the engines still operate in idle mode before turning off completely. In most cases, the ATS cabinet will transfer the load to the backup power source or vice versa when the voltage and frequency are stable and suitable. However, in some cases the end user wants the switching sequence to different backup power sources so it may include additional time delays that can be adjusted on the transfer switches.
Contact point
The control part will include contact points, which will create a signal for the control motor when a problem occurs in the electrical system. In most modern designs, this contact point is usually a dry contact, which will continue the circuit when the mains power is lost. When this contact comes into contact and starts the backup power source. On the contrary, when this contact opens, the generator will stop working and switch back to the grid system. These contacts should be checked regularly to ensure there are no problems in the circuit.
