What are Zamil Steel Trusses?

Zamil Steel Trusses is the specific name for the steel frames and trusses produced by VDsteel company. In fact, Zamil is not a standard-setting authority or a particular standard model for the steel structures in the industrial construction sector, but rather the name of a company that designs and manufactures steel structural frames. However, Zamil was the first company to introduce prefabricated steel frame structures into the Vietnamese market, which is why Vietnamese engineers commonly refer to this type of prefabricated steel structure as Zamil Steel Trusses. 

• Since this technology is not proprietary, only a few years later, many domestic mechanical workshops, both large and small, were able to produce this type of steel frame at a much lower cost while maintaining similar quality. Currently, there are many companies in the market capable of producing and fabricating steel trusses with quality and standards equivalent to Zamil.
• Therefore, customers who need to build prefabricated steel frame factories can consider many other companies in Vietnam, as it is not necessarily required to use Zamil steel trusses. Currently, almost 95% of factory buildings use this type of prefabricated steel frame due to its many superior advantages.
• Most steel structural components are pre-fabricated at the workshop with a strict production and quality control process, from the design stage to fabrication.
• On-site, only the reinforced concrete foundation needs to be constructed according to the design drawings, after which the steel frame can be delivered and assembled. This results in lower costs and a much faster construction and installation time.
• Therefore, the term "Zamil frame" is inaccurate and should be referred to as "prefabricated steel frame (Pre-engineering)." Additionally, it is important not to assume that if a well-known company like Zamil Steel has designed something, it is automatically flawless. Even they may have errors or designs that are not ideal. It is also important to note that the steel structure standards of the United States are not directly applicable in Vietnam.

The advantages of steel trusses (Zamil frame) are as follows:

Prefabricated steel frames have many advantages, and they address most of the disadvantages and conditions that reinforced concrete frames cannot achieve. Below are some of the advantages of prefabricated steel frames:

• Optimized Load-Bearing Capacity of Components

Prefabricated steel frames are carefully calculated, mostly according to American standards. Load-bearing parts are minimized in steel usage, making the frame lighter and saving materials effectively.

• Ability to Span Large Distances

Prefabricated steel frames can span up to 90 meters with a single-span frame and up to 70 meters with each module in the span – with up to 4 modules (totaling 280 meters). This is something that reinforced concrete frames cannot do, or if they can, it would be extremely difficult.

• Construction of Large-Scale Projects

Prefabricated steel frames can be used for projects with heights up to 30 meters (to the bottom edge of the roof) for buildings up to 60 meters wide. Using steel frames for large-scale projects saves a lot compared to reinforced concrete frames (up to 35% cost savings).

• Fast Constructio

The fabrication of structural details at the factory and the subsequent assembly at the site accelerates the construction process and improves the quality of the project. It also minimizes the impact of weather on the construction process.

• Cost and Time Savings for Quick Construction.

Although the cost of prefabricated steel frames is relatively high, they save costs by reducing construction time and quickly bringing the project into operation. This reduces labor costs, construction costs, and project management expenses, leading to significant savings for the project. However, Zamil steel frames also have some drawbacks, such as:

Disadvantages of Zamil Steel Frames

• Effective Only for Large-Spanning Projects and Heavy Industrial Structures
• Monotonous Architecture
• High Technical and Precision Requirements, Strict Technological Process.

As a result, prefabricated steel frames cannot completely replace reinforced concrete frames, despite having many overwhelming advantages over concrete frames.
