Product Description

Steel arch structures are understood as arch-shaped steel frameworks. These structures are made from prefabricated steel frames, which means steel arch structures inherit all the advantages of prefabricated steel buildings.

Steel arch structures have primarily been used for very long spans, where the dead weight of the structure accounts for a significant portion of the supported load. The current architectural trend towards more freedom in form has increased the popularity of arches for much shorter spans. The effective span can be extended by using steel beams and trusses in simple bending, or by using rigid frames, often employing arch forms to achieve an aesthetic effect.

Steel arch structures are equally effective in resisting compressive stress because they can withstand tensile strength and bending stress. They are an ideal material for arch construction. The minimal weight of the material is always recognized, and simple, clean structural details can be easily achieved. The overall stability of the arch in terms of out-of-plane bending is ensured by lateral bracing systems, vertical struts, and purlins. The spacing between fixed points should not exceed 16-20 times the width of the arch.

Application Range of Steel Structures

Steel arch structures are primarily used for large-scale public projects such as sports arenas, parking garages, swimming pools, theaters, or exhibition halls. These structures serve as load-bearing elements in construction projects. Arch structures are typically employed when large spans are required, something that materials like brick, stone, or concrete cannot achieve. Steel arch structures not only help save energy in your project but also contribute to enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the design.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Steel Arch Structures

Similar to other types of steel-framed buildings, steel arch structures offer both advantages and disadvantages when used.

Application Range of Steel Arch Structures: Exhibition halls, cultural centers, swimming pools, sports arenas, etc. The advantage of steel arch-frame buildings is their high aesthetic value, giving the project a unique appearance. VDsteel is currently one of the leading companies in the steel structure field in Vietnam and Asia. We have experience in executing numerous projects with various fields, structures, and scales

Types of Steel Arch Structures

  • Two-Hinged Arch: This type is widely used due to its material efficiency. It has a smaller moment-bearing area, and the moments are distributed relatively evenly, resulting in a more reasonable cross-section design. It is less affected by temperature changes and foundation settlement..
  • Three-Hinged Arch: In this type, the moments are unevenly distributed, leading to material waste. The structure is statically determinate, making assembly more challenging due to the need for creating hinge joints. It is not affected by temperature changes or foundation settlement. The internal forces at the arch foot are large..
  • Non-Hinged Arch: This is a third-degree hyperstatic system. It results in smaller internal forces, leading to material savings. However, it is highly sensitive to temperature changes and foundation settlement.
